Let Me Flip Your Classroom!

    Hey guys!

Our journey of exploring different approaches and tools to improve our students' language learning is going well! Now we tried a Flipped Classroom approach.

The Flipped Classroom approach reverses the traditional learning environment; students acquire new content at home often through videos. And we use class time for active practice and interaction. For language classes, this is a really impressive method as it maximizes the time available for speaking and communicative activities. However, it does come with challenges, such as ensuring all students actually watch the material and have access to the necessary technology.

For our project, we aimed to teach 8 specific vocabulary items selected from 5th graders coursebook Unit 7 Party Time. Instead of isolated drills, we wanted students to experience these words within a real context. Therefore, we created an engaging story telling video where these words appear naturally along with related images.

Our process began by brainstorming story ideas with Grok to fit our target vocabulary. Then we wrote our story. In order to visualize it, we used Google Gemini to analyze our script, break it down into scenes, and generate precise image prompts. A major challenge we faced was maintaining character consistency across different AI-generated images. We solved this by refining our prompts with specific character definitions.

We used these tools to bring this project to life:

  • Google Gemini: Used for script analysis and generating detailed image prompts.

  • Google Nano Banana Pro: The AI image generator that is integrated to Gemini but it works so well and consistent it is worth mentioning. We used it to create our visual scenes based on the prompts.

  • Kdenlive: A free, open-source video editor where we combined our visuals and audio.

  • Canva: Used to design the worksheet. We made sure to use the exact same images from the video in the worksheet questions to trigger the students' visual memory and reinforce learning.
