AI-Enhaced Corpus-Based Activity Desingn; More Engaging Clasrooms!

    Hey guys!

We are back with some amazing useful ideas for your classroom. For our Current Issues in Teaching course, our group was asked to create an AI-enhanced corpus-based activity and a lesson plan using the ASSURE model that explains how we are going to apply it. Our target was 10th-grade Turkish EFL students (B1 level), and we chose the grammar point “must vs have to (theme 1)" from the given book.

We designed a colourful worksheet consists of six activities that guides students step-by-step through SKELL. The worksheet teaches “must” and “have to”, asks students to observe real sentences, match functions, sort examples, and finally complete a pattern-discovery table using line numbers as evidence. The last two activities introduce ChatGPT: students paste real sentences to get explanations and then write their own school-life sentences and receive instant AI feedback. The design is clear, visually engaging and fully follows Ma et al.’s principles of hands-on observation, inductive discovery and output practice.

In class, we will apply it in a 60-minute lesson that takes place in a computer lab or with tablets or some other smart devices. After a short teacher demo, students work in pairs on the worksheet while the teacher monitors. The combination of live corpus searches and personal AI checking keeps students in tact and gives immediate, personalised correction.

Overall, we think our activities would be really effective in the classroom. With these activities we turned a classic grammar topic into an engaging, student-centred discovery process. Possible small issues in real classrooms could be slow internet or temporary ChatGPT access problems. But we already prepared some simple back-up solutions (screenshots and teacher-led checking). It was a great experience to see how free tools like SKELL and ChatGPT can make grammar lessons more autonomous and enjoyable for the students.
